Ponty murder case: Police says Namdhari fired shots

Nov 24, 2012 09:12 PM IST India India

New Delhi: Former Uttarakhand Minority Commission chairman Sukhdev Singh Namdhari was produced in court on Saturday by the police after being arrested for his involvement in the shootout which killed liquor and real estate baron Ponty Chadha and his brother Hardeep. The police told the court that Namdhari had confessed to having opened fire at Hardeep - a claim which now alters the police's version so far.

The police had earlier said that nobody apart from Hardeep and Sachin Tyagi fired during the shootout. the police claimed that Hardeep first fired at Narender. His next target was Ponty Chadha. After killing Ponty he aimed at Namdhari. This is when Namdhari retaliated and fired at him from his licensed pistol.

The question now is whose bullet killed Hardeep. According to the confessional statement of Namdhari, it was the bullets fired by his PSO Sachin Tyagi that killed Hardeep. But a confirmation on that can come only once the ballistic report comes out.

In the court, the police called Namdhari was Ponty Chadha's henchman and said he had taken control of many properties for Ponty. Outside the court, Namdhari called it a conspiracy. Namdhari has been charged with trespassing, robbery and attempt to murder. The court on Saturday sent him to five-day police custody.
