Mumbai: Mumbai's postal department has a one of its kind machine in India which can sort 30,000 mails an hour, that's 500 mails a minute! 
 
But the department, which is one of the most efficient in the country, is still unhappy because after having spent crores on the machine, it’s not working up to its full capacity. 
 
“The automated mail process centre is not working to its full capacity because people do not write the pin code properly,” Postmaster General, Mumbai Circle, K Noorjehan complained. 
 
This letter-sorting machine generates five lakh mails per day but that is five times less than the actual capacity. It also means that every time a pin code is not written, someone at the postal department has to write it manually. 
 
Only when the pin codes are manually fed in that the letter-sorting machine can read them with its radar but this extra work ends up defeating the very purpose of the machine. 
 
“This is adding an element of manual work that can never match the speed of the machine. The public only can help us by being more cooperative,” Noorjehan said. 
 
Only prescribed envelopes and address writing style should be used but few follow the guidelines. So, all that the department gets is post waste.
