Navi Mumbai: In a move that could help the consumer check power theft, the Maharashtra Electricity Distribution Company has introduced pre-paid power meters. With this, paying bills will no longer be a problem and one can just pay the bill with the click of the mouse.
Kasare family had got worried after a recent spike in their electricity bills. But a newly-installed pre-paid power meter has come to their rescue.
The meter comes with a unit called CIU or consumer interface unit. It keeps the consumers updated with the balance, hourly consumption and units used at any time of the day. Not just that, it helps save power.
"It helps us to see how much power we are consuming at any point. If it is more than required we can switch off the extra things," said Vithal Kasare.
As of now Mahavitran has started installing these meters only in Navi Mumbai. The plan is to install 5000 meters in the month of October.
"It mainly helps us in checking power theft. If a consumer gets only Rs 500 recharged and uses for 2-3 months, we know something is wrong. We can then monitor his usage and catch him," said Sandip Chate, Jr Engineer, Mahavitran.
No standing in long queues to pay the electricity bill, this meter can even be recharged on Mahavitran's site using debit or credit card. All you have to do is enter your unique consumer number.
For people who have bad memory and forget to recharge the prepaid meter, the CIU unit will raise an alarm thrice when the balance drops to 100. But in case you miss the alarm, your electricity won't be disconnected at night or on holidays.
