Sarabjit's condition deteriorates further, family to return to India

Lahore: The news on Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh's health continues to be grim. Doctors treating him at Lahore's Jinnah Hospital say his condition has deteriorated further. PTI reports that his blood pressure is being maintained with support. He had entered a "critical phase" and his chances of survival had been very slim, said doctors.

Sarabjit's lawyer will file a new petition in the Lahore High Court on Wednesday asking for Indian doctors to examine the death row convict. Indian High Commission officials have also asked Pakistani doctors if Sarabjit can be treated abroad.

His family is set to return to India later on Wednesday to decide on a future course of action. Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said the government is doing its best to support Sarabjit's family. "The External Affairs Ministry is already in touch with the government. We are trying to help Sarabjit and his family in all possible ways," Shinde said.

External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said there hasn't been a solid response from Pakistan on India's appeal to move Sarabjit Singh saying India has to trust the medical board. "We have not got a solid response that I was hoping to get. We of course have to trust the medical board. We do have a judicial committee in Rawalpindi. We have sought access to the judicial committee. This is to ensure welfare of Sarabjit and other Indian prisoners," Khurshid said.

There have been hints that 49-year-old Sarabjit is brain dead and is being sustained by life support mechanisms. Sarabjit's sister Dalbir has said that she needs to consult with people back in India and would be crossing Wagah on Wednesday.
