Mumbai: When the UK Trade and Investment Council (UKIBC) decided to set up shop in Mumbai, it expected to foot a heavy bill for all the office paraphernalia and of course realty especially premium office space at the Bandra Kurla complex. But then the Council went in for a ready-to-use office - a serviced office.
Business Advisor UKIBC, Ashish Goenka says, "There are a lot of hidden costs in setting up an office. There is also the cost of lost business when you are sitting up. With this serviced office, we avoid all that."
A relatively new concept in India, a serviced office comes with all the facilities - conference rooms, a reception and canteens on a 'pay as you use' option and you don't even have to worry about maintainance.
Serviced office providers say the idea is to allow people to concentrate on their business.
Director Avanta, David Kinnaird says, "What we are selling is the ability to work very quickly and very cheaply, without any long term commitment."
Available in Delhi and Mumbai at the moment, the rent for one workstation in a serviced office is anywhere between Rs 40,000 to Rs 80,000 per month. Facilities like documentation and beverages come for an additional package of Rs 9,900 (starting rate) per month.
When taking a break from work, you can surf the net on laptops while sipping on a hot coffee - not bad for an office canteen. But whether the Indian corporate community, which is looking to cut costs, accepts this novel idea or not remains to be seen as yet.
