New Delhi: After nearly 10 years in jail, dismissed IPS officer Ravi Kant Sharma was on Wednesday acquitted in the murder case of journalist Shivani Bhatnagar. 
 
The Delhi High Court observed that there was benefit of doubt. However, the court upheld the conviction of Pradeep Sharma, one of the four persons found guilty by the lower court. 
 
On January 23, 1999, journalist Shivani Bhatnagar was found dead in her residence in Delhi. The death immediately made national headlines with the finger of suspicion pointing towards senior IPS officer RK Sharma, her alleged lover. 
 
Sharma, who was once an officer in the Prime Minister's office, allegedly used his position and political links to hush up the case. However, he was finally arrested in 2001 and sentenced to life imprisonment with three others. 
 
“His relation with Shivani was strained and that's why he wanted to eliminate her,” public prosecutor Pawan Sharma had said. 
 
Ten years on, the prosecution failed to convince the Delhi High Court. And as a result, RK sharma walked free, as did two of his alleged accomplices, Sri Bhagwan and Satya Prakash. Only the sentence of Pradeep Sharma, the man believed to be the hired killer was confirmed. 
 
The High Court made a clear distinction. It said there was enough to prove that Pradeep Sharma had murdered Shivani Bhatnagar. But at the same time there was nothing to prove that RK Sharma, Satya Prakash and Sri Bhagwan had hired him, and that's why they were given the benefit of doubt. 
 
The court also said that the evidence provided by the police was just not strong enough. 
 
"I had told the court that the details provided were fabricated," said RK Sharma's lawyer Sushil Kumar. 
 
The prosecution is going to challenge the verdict in the Supreme Court. However, what's unfortunate is that even 11 years on, the motive in the case remains unclear, with the court saying that in the absence of strong evidence, it is difficult to say why Shivani was killed.
