New Delhi: Rajasthan Police on Monday arrested the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) kingpin, believed to have masterminded the Jaipur blasts, from Lucknow. Police suspect Shahbaz Hussain, who is the regional head of SIMI, was also involved in the Ahmedabad blasts. Lucknow CJM court has given Rajasthan Police 48-hour transit remand for Shahbaz. Police also made six more arrests from various parts of the state under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. Their possible link to Jaipur blast is being probed. Eight serial blasts rocked the city of Jaipur at 1935 Hours IST on May 13, killing 60 people and injuring 150 others. The blasts — which were of medium intensity — took place in the walled city area. The same month, a special operation group in Rajasthan detained a suspected member of SIMI from the Sawai Madhopur area. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has extended the ban on SIMI by six weeks. The Centre had approached the apex court after the Delhi High Court stayed its two-year extension of the ban and produced evidence, linking SIMI to the Ahmedabad serial blasts. The High Court had found the evidence produced by the Centre weak and refused the extension. A Bench headed by Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan posted the matter for further hearing on September 24.
