Moscow: A withering critique on Russian Army life set to the tunes of Eminem was the amateur rap video by posted by a Russian officer on the Internet. It was a rare public complaint about squalid living conditions in the barracks - peeling walls, filthy bathrooms and all. 
 
The rap takes the form of an email to Russia's Defence Minister in which the young officer complains about his poor salary and conditions - one of many complaints that have gone unanswered. 
 
Esteemed Defense Minister, I must've written you about six times now. I've sent you both posted letters as well as e-mails. Apparently my envelopes haven't reached you, is how the song goes. 
 
It's a satire, of course, but the problems of decay and poverty in the Russian military are very real. The officer involved has been posted to Siberia in a move the Defense Ministry says is unrelated to the video. 
 
But Military analysts say the rap may have been viewed very dimly by the Kremlin. 
 
"Right now, the Russian leadership in the Kremlin has very ambitious plans for a military. It is going to have air superiority, new weapons on a par with the United States. The problem is, it's a very big military and the end result is we have officers who get meagre pay, bad living conditions and outdated weapons," says military analyst Pavel Felgenhaeur. 
 
The Kremlin would like to portray its military as a proud, resurgent force, able to project power. But this lyrical message from within the ranks paints a far more wretched image.
