'Over 9,000 dead in Syria in 11 months'

Feb 24, 2012 07:59 AM IST India India

Damascus: The bombings in the rebel bastion Homs by the Syrian government forces have entered the 21st day. Opposition groups in Syria claim over 100 people were killed on Thursday, taking to toll to over 9,000 in the last 11 months. The violence continues even after a UN report accused the government of crimes against humanity. CNN-IBN and IBN-7 are the first two Indian news channels to report from the conflict zone.

A confidential list of top Syrian officials suspected of ordering crimes against humanity including murder, abductions and torture has been given to the United Nations for possible future prosecution, UN investigators said on Thursday.

The three-member panel said that they had drawn up a secret list of names of commanding officers and officials alleged to be responsible for gross violations. The list, which also identifies armed opposition units tied to abuses, might help "future credible investigations by competent authorities".

Former UN secretary general Kofi Annan has been appointed the world body's envoy to Syria.

Meanwhile US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has given the Syrian Opposition a vote of confidence. She said, "We believe that the Syrian National Council, which will be there sitting at the table, will show that there is an alternative to the Assad regime, one that respects the rights of all Syrians."
