New Delhi: Within 36 hours of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announcing its class XII results, on May 25, 2006, two adolescents committed suicide due to underperformance. 
 
On June 17, 19-year-old Neha Kakkar allegedly jumped off the Janakpuri tower. A message saved in her cellphone revealed signs of a broken relationship. 
 
"I have been pressurized for so long. Fourteen years of studies is too much to handle. There is so much pressure from everyone around you. If you are in a group of 10 people, nine out of them will ask how you did in your boards," said a 19-year-old student, Siddhanth. 
 
It's not just about academic pressure or relationship voes, it's also about living up to the image of being cool and being accepted by one's peers. 
 
 
"When I told my friends I was feeling low they made fun of me and said, ‘That's not possible you can never be sad.’ When you are in a group of friends, it’s like you have to have a smiling face," said Siddhanth. 
 
Mood swings, aggression, irritability, a feeling of sadness, social withdrawal, weight loss, binging— these are signs that most parents dismiss as symptoms of "growing pains" but they also hint at the fact that perhaps life for these teens can get difficult to grapple with. 
 
"Feeling very conflicted and unvalidated in your home you tend to look for relationships. Especially since there is a high possibility of that in today’s culture, it becomes a big thing," said a child counselor, Ameeta Shah. 
 
Unfortunately, the sudden increase in the number of suicide cases is only the tip of the iceberg. 
 
"If there is even a trigger like an event that the child is not able to handle then suicide seems to be the answer," said a clinical psychologist, Bhawna Barmi. 
 
"Tens and thousands of questions are just flowing in your mind. You are still in the middle of nowhere and looking around for answers. I have never thought of ending my life but…" said Siddhanth. 
 
The words drift away leaving several things unanswered and raising many questions.
