The then Rajiv Gandhi government overturned a Supreme Court verdict that allowed subsistence maintenance for divorced Shah Bano. He got the Muslim Women Protection on Divorce Act through Parliament that provided maintenance only for the Iddat Period. Fast forward to today, after PM Modi's government comes out with a bill criminalizing Triple Talaq and the Lok Sabha passing it, the Congress says it will scrap the criminalisation clause if voted to power, alleging it doesn't empower Muslim women but penalizes Muslim men.
