New Delhi: An inmate at the high security Tihar prison died and five sustained injuries on Friday following a violent clash between two groups.
Sources said Javed, a resident of Seelumpur, succumbed to injuries at around 4 pm on Friday. His body has been sent for postmortem but prima facie it appears that he was attacked with improvised knife. This is the third unnatural death in 2013 in India's most high profile prison. A judicial probe has now been ordered.
Just two months back Ram Singh, the main accused in the December 16 gangrape case committed suicide inside his prison cell. Days later a female under trial hung herself in her cell. Friday's incident happened despite security being increased.
Tihar has a three-layered security system:
- Surveillance and external security is with the personnel of ITBP and CRPF.
- Tamil Nadu Special Police mans various gates and checks visitors.
- While the Delhi Prisons department takes care of Jail operations.
But even these don't seem enough to provide security to over 12000 inmates inside. It also doesn't help that the jail is filled to double its capacity. After the attack on a Pakistani prisoner in Jammu, and now this incident, the authorities need to look closely at how jails are managed.
