Delhi gangrape: Victim's condition deteriorates

Dec 23, 2012 12:16 PM IST India India

New Delhi: Even as the country seethes with anger and demands justice for the 23-year-old victim of gangrape in Delhi, doctors say that her condition has worsened. According to Dr BD Athani, Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, she has been put on ventilator again as she is facing respiratory problems.

The victim had been given some juice on Saturday evening and had been taken off the ventilator for over 36 hours. The doctors also tried to take her off the bed and make her take a few steps. Doctors say the young paramedic student was made to get up from her bed and take a few steps. Doctors say they would continue with the exercise. However, there is still some time before she actually starts walking on her own.

Doctors had also said they are keeping the patient on high doses of antibiotics and high standards of hygiene - two important factors for preventing infection.

Doctors from the hospital's psychology department had on Saturday cleared the victim's psychological health by saying she is "very composed and responding well to their questions". They had said the victim, who was beaten by iron rods and then raped by half-a-dozen men in a moving bus, was "extraordinarily stable" and "optimistic about her future". The doctors had also lauded the victim and said she didn't show any signs of being sad.

Police on Saturday had also said that the victim recorded a 'very bold statement'. DCP (South) Chhaya Sharma had further said the version given by the girl corroborates the statement of her male friend. Three of the accused will be produced before a Delhi court on Sunday.

Addressing a press conference, Chhaya Sharma said, "The juvenile accused, whom we caught yesterday, has had a very wayward life. He has six siblings, his father is mentally unstable. He has not contacted any of his family members in the past five years." She added, "When Raju came to Delhi, he worked at a tea stall and later joined as a helper in various buses."

The Delhi Police had been conducting raids in Haryana and Bihar to trace the arrested accused, who had been absconding since the incident took place. On Thursday, one of the four accused in the case was "identified" by the victim's friend during a Test Identification Parade (TIP) at Tihar Jail.

The victim's male friend, an engineer in a software company, identified Mukesh during TIP, a senior police official said. Out of the four accused, only Mukesh had agreed to TIP when he was produced before a court on Thursday. Other accused, Ram Singh, Pawan and Vinay, had refused to undergo TIP.

Police have invoked the stringent charges of attempt to murder and destruction of evidence against the accused. Investigators had earlier pressed charges against them under sections 365 (kidnapping or abducting), 376 (2)(g) (gang rape), 377 (unnatural offences), 394 (hurting in committing robbery) and 34 (common intention) of IPC.
