A banyan tree in Telangana, which quite literally had to be put on saline drip, is now making a miraculous recovery. The world's second largest banyan tree had been hit hard by a termite infestation. Once a major tourist draw, the massive tree appeared to be dying. It was then that officials in Mahabubnagar took the unusual step of putting the 700-year-old tree on a saline drip. A diluted chemical mixture was fed directly into the tree's branches to fight the termite infestation. Now, the out-of-the-box thinking and weeks of efforts have paid off. The iconic banyan is reviving, putting out new shoots and leaves. The administration says the Pillalamarri banyan will soon be ready to receive visitors again. Now perhaps, it'll be called The Tree That Lived.
