Victory parties can sometimes get crazy. But they got out of hand in Tripura today. Even before the new BJP Chief Minister of the state could be sworn in, party cadres smashed down 2 statues of the Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It is easy to see symbolism in the moment — 25 years of Left rule being toppled at the hands of the BJP. But is this how mature democracies behave — smashing statues and symbols that represent an ideology not of their own? This was pure and simple vandalism that got both covert and overt support from a party that is now going to govern the state.
