I am an Indian Muslim and I can't help but be perplexed by the #TalkToAMuslim that has been trending for the last few days. It started doing the rounds after PM Narendra Modi targeted Rahul Gandhi for allegedly referring to the Congress as a Muslim Party. While the intent is to curb Islamophobia and break Muslim stereotypes, the reaction hasn't been all that positive. Some say that the hashtag is creating a divide based on religious identity. Others ask - have we actually reached the stage in Hindu-Muslim relations that this hashtag is needed? Is the campaign a powerful message or needlessly patronising?
