On August 22, the Supreme Court, in a landmark verdict, "set aside" the centuries-old practice of instant triple talaq in which Muslim men divorce their wives by uttering talaq three times in quick succession. It was celebrated and welcomed by Muslim women across the country but now the Modi govt is going a step further. Coming up with what clearly is a progressive legislation to protect the rights of Muslim women, the government is looking at making triple talaq a non-bailable offence, so that those who indulge in the act can go to jail for 3 years.
