According to a WHO survey in 2016, Mumbai was rated the fifth most polluted megacity in the world. The population is burgeoning, there’s construction round the clock, the green cover is shrinking and the quality of life poor. Yet proving that concerted and committed citizen action can make a difference, Mumbai lawyer Afroz Shah has spent over 85 weeks cleaning up Versova beach in North Mumbai. Recognized by the UN as a Champion of the Earth and mentioned by the Prime Minister in his Mann Ki Baat radio broadcast Shah is an unusual young man who’s chosen action over words. He is talking to Anuradha SenGupta on Off Centre this week.
