Chinese president Xi Jinping reaffirmed Beijing’s support for ‘reunification’ with self-ruled Taiwan. Unlike earlier, Xi adopted a softer tone and promised to unify Taiwan by peaceful means. Speaking at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, Xi said the Chinese people have a ‘glorious tradition’ of opposing separatism.
Xi Jinping has been determined to ‘unify’ Taiwan with the mainland under what it calls the ‘one China principle’. But the Chinese president’s latest statement is a departure from the aggressive strategy it has displayed so far. Xi’s statement came just days after nearly 150 Chinese PLA warplanes entered Taiwan’s air defence zone over 4 days.
