New Delhi: As the daughter, Kanimozhi, faced a difficult day in court, DMK chief M Karunanidhi was in Delhi meeting his most powerful political ally, Congress. It was the first time Karunanidhi met Sonia Gandhi after Kanimozhhi's arrest. Karunanidhi and his wife Rajathi Ammal went to Sonia's 10-Janpath residence on Saturday morning and held discussions for about 30 minutes.

Later in the evening, Karunanidhi also paid a visit to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The timing of the meetings has led to speculation that the DMK chief is desperately trying to get the Congress' help in fighting the 2G case.

DMK leader TKS Elangovan, however said that the meeting was a courtesy visit to inquire about Sonia's health and not a political meeting.

DMK leader TKS Elangovan said, "He is here to meet his daughter and meeting Sonia was a courtesy visit to inquire about her health and not a political meeting."

Congress on the other hand refused to comment on the 2G case verdict.

Law Minister Salman Khurshid said, "When charges are being framed it's not right to comment on the court proceedings but now the bail hearing can proceed."

Right now, getting bail for Kanimozhi is the key focus for DMK.

Kanimozhi has been charged with abetment of illegal gratification, criminal conspiracy for criminal breach of trust, cheating, forgery, accepting bribe/illegal gratification and misuse of office.

BJP leader Subramaniam Swamy said, "There's plenty of evidence to show that she has been in consultation with Raja throughout. She has a very major role in the whole thing and therefore abetment is inevitable."

Within the DMK Kanimozhi supporters have often alleged that Karunanidhi has not done enough to back her. Observers say his visit is an effort to show his support to her, but they also point out that there's little the party, decimated in the assembly polls, can do in her case.

Kanimozhi has been lodged in jail for almost six months and has been denied bail. The court will resume hearing on the bail applications of various accused, including that of Kanimozhi, from October 24. The question for the DMK is how long the daughter will have to stay in the prison.
