Kolkata: Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary defended himself and refused to apologise for alleged Congress workers going on a rampage at the residence of a district magistrate. He also told CNN-IBN that he will resign as minister if it's proved that his supporters damaged property. 
 
"We went to meet DM but he refused to meet. Our workers got angry. It's the DM's employees who turned violent. I was the one who tried to calm things down," Chowdhary said after the incident. 
 
"It was unmitigated falsehood that is being propagated by some vested interest may be," he said in an interview to IBN18 Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai. "If any chair was broken, I am ready to resign from my post. I was pacifying the irate mob, it is due to my persistent endeavour that the irate mob was calmed down that's why I should be appreciated by you all," he added. 
 
This came after workers of the Congress party trashed the home of the District Magistrate of Murshidabad, led by Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary. Hundreds of Congress workers, led by party MP, ransacked the premises after the DM allegedly refused to meet them when they went to complain about the alleged custodial death of a Congress worker in January. The workers smashed flower pots, pulled down a sun shed and hurled brickbats breaking the windscreen of a vehicle. 
 
The West Bengal Congress leadership also stood by him while the Trinamool Congress was quick to grab political mileage. Former Union Railway Minister Mukul Roy said that he had no words to condemn the violence as it was led by a Union Minister. 
 
From Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee losing her cool to one Union Minister allegedly indulging in street violence, and with the Panchayat elections just around the corner, West Bengal politics seems to be getting uglier every day.
