New Delhi: The Lokpal Bill, which is being debated in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, is likely to be sent to a select committee, sources said. Sources said that this is the last option but if the Sense of House is in favour of the move, then the Bill will be sent to the committee.
The Bill will be sent to the select committee after the debate in the Rajya Sabha for which eight hours have been allotted by the Chairman of the House, Mohammad Hamid Ansari.
A select committee is meant for specific purpose for a specific bill and the changes suggested by the select committee will be binding on the government.
The Congress core group will meet again on Thursday evening and is ready to send to the Bill to the select committee if all options fail.
Such a move will also suit the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government which is in a minority in the Upper House of Parliament and is banking on regional outfits, nominated and Independent members to come to its rescue.
During the debate on the Lokpal Bill in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday several MPs had demanded that the present legislation should be withdrawn and sent to the select committee as many of the provisions were unconstitutional.
However, after an acrimonious debate that went on for almost 11 hours the Lokpal Bill was passed with several amendments.
