Cong failed the tribal community of India: Sangma

New Delhi: The NDA's Presidential candidate PA Sangma said on Thursday that he was grateful to the BJP, the BJD and other coalition allies for their support to him. Addressing a press conference, the former Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader said that his nomination, to be filed today, would be sponsored by the Tribal Forum of India, nominated by the Biju Janata Dal and backed by the BJP and other NDA allies.

He further said, "On May 9, the Tribal Forum of India met under the leadership of Arvind Netam. It was unanimously decided to appeal to all political parties to consider a tribal candidate for the post of President. We sought an appointment to meet Sonia Gandhi. We were asked to wait at the Central Hall consecutively for three days. We could not get an appointment. We then met other leaders."

He also said that he had met Trinamool Congress chief and key UPA ally Mamata Banerjee for her support, adding that it went "very well".

He added that the Congress did not welcome the candidature of a tribal for the post of President despite the tribal community having stood by it throughout.

"We wanted to express that the tribals in India have all along stood by the Congress. We had expected Congress would welcome our request. However, the Congress did not come out in support of tribals."

"Today is a victory of tribal unity, that a tribal is filing nomination for the post of President," he added.
