Jaitley phone tapping case: The big questions

Mar 01, 2013 08:50 PM IST Politics Politics

New Delhi: Arun Jaitley, Vijay Goel, Sudhanshu Mittal and Nitin Gadkari - all these BJP leaders were allegedly on the radar of private detective Anurag Singh and his aides. Police are investigating whether this could have be done by rival factions within the BJP itself.

So who exactly is Anurag Singh? He is an MBBS doctor-turned-private eye. Though arrested in 2006 for tapping phones of Amar Singh, he maintained relations with the police and intelligence agecies, even helping them with crimes related to terrorism and the Internet.

Singh, along with detectives Nitish and Neeraj, obtained call records of a number of politicians and businessmen through constable Arvind Dabas over the last six months. A name that has also come up in the probe is that of former IPL chairman Lalit Modi.

While the Delhi Police remains tight-lipped, some questions are unanswered:

- Why did the police not take any action against constable Arvind Dabas who was on unauthorized leave for the last one year?

- How did senior officers fail to detect the fact that Dabas was misusing passwords of his seniors to procure call details of important leaders?

- Is the police embarrassed because the rot in their own ranks has been exposed?

Sources now say that the police is probing a possible rivalry within the BJP as the reason behind this espionage operation. They are now going through Anurag Singh's phone and computer records to find the mastermind behind this operation. The Police are also likely to question several businessmen and politicians about this operation. More arrests are likely in the days to come.
