New Delhi: A day after the Supreme Court questioned the government over the absence of a Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has defended herself on Saturday. 
 
"The Supreme Court has made it clear that their observation is not against the Speaker," said Mahajan. 
 
She said that the Supreme Court has asked the government and not her to respond to the Leader of Opposition issue in the Lower House. 
 
"The Attorney General will inform the apex court about the government's stand on the Leader of Opposition with regard to Lokpal appointment. My job was to decide whether a leader should be recognised as a Leader of Opposition or not and that decision has been taken based on numbers. No opposition party has more than 55 members, " she added. 
 
The apex court had pulled up the government over the vacant post, saying it was the first time that Parliament was faced with such a scenario making it difficult to make crucial appointments like the Lokpal. 
 
The Speaker's decision not to appoint a Leader of Opposition was set to affect the functions of important constitutional authorities including the post of the Chief Information Commissioner. 
 
After Rajiv Mathur retired on Friday from the post of CIC, the government is yet to name the new chief. However, according to the Right to Information Act, the Leader of Opposition is required to give his or her view on the appointment of a new CIC. 
 
Reacting to the developments, Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, "The BJP is trapped in its own net. A vacancy in the constitutional position has arisen and the government will get into a problem every time the LoP is needed for such an appointment. It is yet to be seen if the government will keep the Lokpal vacant or change the act."
