New Delhi: Former Haryana chief minister OP Chautala and his son Ajay Singh were on Tuesday sentenced to 10 years in jail for their involvement in the teachers' recruitment scam. Eleven others, including the three main accused in the case - Sanjiv Kumar, Vidya Dhar and Sher Singh Badshami - were also awarded a 10-year jail term.

The sentencing came after a delay of a few hours as violent protests broke out outside the court premises in the morning. The protesting Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) workers alleged political conspiracy against the Chautala family and clashed with the policemen. The police had to resort to lathicharge and fire teargas shells to disperse the crowd.

As the punishment was announcement, more protests broke out outside the court, with the police having to fire 7-8 teargas shells.

The police also beefed up security along the border areas and outside the Delhi residence of the Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda anticipating violence. Sources say that no vehicle carrying INLD workers are being allowed to ply.

Meanwhile, Haryana Education Minister Geeta Bhukkal said that a decision on the teachers recruited under the scam would be taken after going through the judgement.
