New Delhi: Blocking highways and railway tracks for three days now, the Gujjar community plans to intensify their protests over reservation for government jobs - after a Rajasthan High Court order on Wednesday refusing to grant 5 per cent quota. 
 
Members of the Gujjar community blocked roads and rail links for the third day running despite a Rajasthan High Court order that effectively postponed their claim to next year. 
 
The battle for Scheduled Tribe status for the Gujjar community in Rajasthan is set to intensify further on the state's highways and railroads. Gujjars are protesting for the third day now, for the fourth year in a row for ST status. 
 
On Wednesday, the Rajasthan High Court refused to grant the 5 percent quota in government jobs, and directed the state government instead to present its case before the backward classes commission in a year's time. 
 
“Government will decide whatever the final verdict of High Court will be. Justice will be done to OBC. I appeal to Col Bainsla and all others to maintain peace and end the on going protests. There is no one above than judiciary,” said Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot. 
 
The news has upset the protesting Gujjars in Pilukapura who have been camping on railway tracks for three days now. Their leader Col Bainsla has called for mobilizing the community to join the protests in larger numbers, and has also warned that milk supply to the region would be cut off. The community wants a 5 percent quota to be carved out from the existing OBC category and a freeze on government recruitments till that happens. 
 
“We will not leave these tracks unless the government gives us 5 percent quota out of the OBC category and until then put the recruitment for the one lakh govt jobs on hold,” said Col Bainsla, Gujjar leader, Pilukapura. 
 
While the Gujjars' warning to intensify their stir directly translates into trouble for the Gehlot Government, the worst sufferer of the protests in the man on the street left out in the cold to deal with disrupted rail and road traffic just before the winter break.
