New Delhi: After a historic win, comes the challenge of government formation in Haryana. The BJP with 47 seats has a clear majority but once again it boils down to caste equations.
Emulating Bhajan Lal's formula of mobilising non-Jats, the choice in the BJP may finally narrow down to Karnal MLA Manohar Lal Khattar after 15 years of Chautala-Hooda rule.
The legislative party meets pn Tuesday to zero in on the name. "We will elect the leader tomorrow," said Haryana BJP incharge Jagdish Mukhi.
Capt Abhimanyu, another contender for the CM post is the Jat face of the BJP in Haryana. The only argument in his favor seems to be just that a non-Jat CM in Haryana may not be good for BJP's prospects in adjoining states like Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
But with only 9 out of 27 BJP Jat candidates making it to the Assembly it would be difficult for the party to ignore the massive non-Jat mobilisation in its favour.
The legislature party meets in the presence of central observers on Tuesday. The newly elected MLAs will take a final call on who will sit in the Chief Minister's chair.
