New Delhi: DMK Chief M Karunanidhi commented on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's court appearance in a decade-old disproportionate assets case and said she has bowed her head to justice. 
 
"Jayalalithaa has been constantly filing for exemptions because she did not want to go to court, " added Karunanidhi. 
 
Meanwhile, the Bangalore court will record Jayalalithaa's final statements in the Rs 66 crore disproportionate assets case. It is some of the many cases that were filed against her after her highly controversial tenure as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister between 1991 and 1996. 
 
The Supreme Court had earlier rejected Jayalalithaa's plea seeking exemption. 
 
Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy said, "The case in 1996 was quite strong but over the years, there are mitigating circumstances in her favour. She herself may not have a long-term problem of a sentence of more than two years." 
 
The case against Jayalalithaa was first filed by Subramanian Swamy in 1996 and later pursued by the DMK. In 2001, Jayalalithaa returned to power in the state and the case was transferred by the SC to Karnataka in 2003. 
 
Jayalalithaa's close friend Sasikala has already made an appearance before the court. 
 
As part of the security measures, only those lawyers, who are involved in the case, were allowed to enter the court while others were not let inside the premises. 
 
Section 144 was also imposed around the court premises on Monday, extending till the hearing was over. 
 
It's a reminder of an uncomfortable past for Jayalalithaa and her decimated arch rival the DMK is hoping to gain political advantage.
