New Delhi: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is the most popular politician in the social media with over 22 lakh Twitter followers. He has surpassed his political rivals and has been successful in creating more waves than the others on the web with countless people interested in Modi on the social networking sites.
Modi wields more power than any of his 'social' rivals and no other political leader in India can beat him when it comes to exercising power through Twitter, Facebook and Blogs and even 'hanging out' with his followers. He has recently become the most popular politician on Twitter.
While his fans on the internet are hopeful that he will storm the South Block through this medium. The ruling party Congress is not impressed. Union Minister Jairam Ramesh had recently mocked Modi saying that he only keeps talking about himself. "I, I, I, me, me, me. I am your Alibaba. I am the guy who got your 'Jaddu ki Chaddi' (Magic wand)," Ramesh said.
The popularity of Modi has forced the Congress to set up its own social media cell to counter the BJP's aggressive campaign.
A recent survey revealed that Modi is also the most mentioned Indian politician on twitter and Congress's 'Yuvraj' Rahul Gandhi is a far second.
According to the same survey what works in Modi's favour are his development and economic policies and also religion and caste. But as as much as the BJP's poll campaign Chief would like to forget the year 2002, the negative mentions still include the post Godhra riots.
If followers on Twitter are to be believed, Modi is miles ahead of the rest in the race for 7 Race Course Road. Only time will tell if this massive virtual wave in favour of Modi will actually translate in to votes in the upcoming elections.
