Ahmedabad: An uneasy calm prevails in the Naroda Patiya locality of Ahmedabad hours before the sentencing of 32 persons convicted in the 2002 massacre during the Gujarat riots. Former Gujarat minister and BJP MLA Maya Kodnani and Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi are among those convicted. Although the police presence has been tightened in the area, the residents remain apprehensive. 
 
Naroda Patiya resident Salim Shaikh said, "There is some apprehension among the residents. Some have gone to stay temporarily at other places. But the enhanced police presence is reassuring." 
 
For some, though, the cycle of justice has not been completed. Naroda Patiya eyewitness Jannatbibi said, "People who committed crimes against us should be caught. They poured kerosene and burnt my family members." 
 
"Police officers like KK Mysorewala not only stood by, but also took part in killing innocent people. Why have they still not been arrested," questioned Salim Shaikh. 
 
Traders of Naroda Patiya have decided to down their shutters on Friday as the sentencing takes place. 
 
Naroda Patiya Businessman Javal Patel said, "Many of those convicted had nothing to do with this crime or anything. People here basically are upset with this and stand united." 
 
As people from both communities anxiously wait for sentencing in the sensational Naroda Patiya case, what's clearly missing is remorse on one side and pardon on the other.
