Patna: In a major jolt to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Social Welfare Minister Parveen Amanullah resigned from the Cabinet and Janata Dal United. Parveen, wife of former IAS officer Afzal Amanullah, announced her decision at a press conference in Patna on Tuesday.
Parveen said that she was finding it difficult to work in the present system and also announced to quit membership of the JDU. The minister said she would return to social work, her passion for a long time.
She did not give any specific reason for quitting and said she did not have any grudge against the Chief Minister and other ministerial colleagues.
She also thanked the Chief Minister for making her minister in his Cabinet.
Kumar has been trying to cobble up a secular front with the help of Left Front and has already expressed the desire to enter into an alliance with the communist parties in Bihar.
The resignation coming months before the Lok Sabha elections can have serious repurcussions for the party. The JDU which broke its 17-year-old alliance with the BJP after Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was named as the party's prime ministerial candidate is now looking for new allies.
The party has so far not formalised its alliance with any of the parties and a decision is expected on February 5 when all the regional parties are expected to meet in the national capital.
