Rae Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh): It works like magic. Whenever Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s daughter Priyanka Vadhra arrives in Rae Bareilly, she is almost mobbed and it becomes a nightmare for her SPG protectors. Her relatively low profile in public life over the past two years hasn't really dented her popularity in this Nehru-Gandhi pocket borough: she talks and people listen. “She has the ability to draw crowds. When she talks, people pay attention,” said a villager Ashutosh Mishra. She had been campaigning here long before her brother began his political journey. She mingles freely with voters both young and old and she also reaches out to the women. Her aim is clear: to ensure that Congress wins more than two assembly seats in Amethi and Rae Bareilly. “I appeal to you to vote for Rahul Gandhi and the Congress in the Vidhan Sabha elections. Your vote will help us to develop your constituency,” says Priyanka in a speech. And she stoutly defends her brother Rahul Gandhi. “Mulayam Singh Yadav should know that you can't write off anybody in politics and my brother will prove him wrong,” she says. Priyanka’s presence on the campaign trail is electrifying with the crowds out and listening. Her presence in Rai Bareilly and Amethi is indispensable to the Congress.
