New Delhi: Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has upped the election pitch in Uttar Pradesh. He has now used a weaver as his brand ambassador in the state. At an election rally in Azamgarh, he praised an ordinary weaver Faizan for the role he had played in wrapping up the Centre's special package for UP weavers.
He had met Faizan in Newada during his tour across UP last year. At that gathering, Faizan told the Amethi MP that his ambitious Rs 6,000 crore special package for weavers meant nothing if the money is routed the usual way.
The Congress General Secretary had then written to the Union Textiles Minister Anand Sharma on the plight of weavers, who announced a Rs 6,234 crore package for over 13 lakh handloom weavers.
In December, 2011, the Centre, in fact, gave its nod to a Rs 2,350 crore package.
