Chhattisgarh comes under Naxal attack but Shinde still out of country

May 27, 2013 02:35 PM IST Politics Politics

New Delhi: At a time when India is facing its most acute internal security crisis, the country's Home Minister continues to remain in the US. Sushil Kumar Shinde attended a US Homeland Security dialogue from May 20 to 22 and then extended his visit until May 29.

His officials, including Home Secretary RK Singh have returned. Had he come back as per schedule, he would have been able to travel to Bastar, where the deadly Naxal attack took place, with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Sonia and Rahul Gandhi and the Minister of State for Home RPN Singh.

A large group of heavily armed Naxals had targeted the Congress convoy during the Parivartan Yatra in Darba Ghati on Saturday afternoon and almost wiped out the state party leadership. Among those killed were state party chief Nand Kumar Patel, his son Dinesh, Sulwa Judum founder Mahendra Karma, former Congress MLA Uday Mudliyar and two other people. The deceased included several other Congress leaders and security personnel accompanying the convoy.
