New Delhi: With Supreme Court staying Navjot Singh Sidhu’s conviction, the BJP candidate will contest now from Amritsar as the party’s star campaigner. 
 
“It's God who decides our fate. What's the point in holding grudges? If you have time, enter politics. The whole nation trusts you,” Sidhu said moments after the SC ruling. 
 
BJP's chief mentor, Atal Behari Vajpayee also came out openly in Sidhu’s support. "Navjot is not guilty. He is innocent," Vajpayee said. 
 
For a party where there are many jostling for the top job and which seems reluctant to give space to the new, the BJP, for a change, did not seem to grudge the attention the former MP was getting. 
 
 
"The fact that the day he was convicted, he chose to resign. Who else has done that?" said BJP spokesperson Arun Jaitly. 
 
So Why does Sidhu matter so much for the BJP? He is a Sikh leader in a party identified with the Hindu urban voter in Punjab. 
 
Also, the party does not have a national leader from the state. 
 
If the Congress is projecting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as son of the soil, then for the BJP, Sidhu provides at least the semblance of a counter attack. 
 
Above all, Sidhu with his Sidhuisms and his mastery of the Punjabi folk language can easily be considered the Lalu Yadav of the BJP. 
 
And in a political system where votes are often won on rustic wit, Sidhu raises his party's hopes.
