Kolkata: April 17, 2012: Trinamool Congress leader Jyotipriyo Mullik addressed a public rally and said, "You shouldn't eat with them (the CPM) or get your daughters married into their families. Socially boycott the CPM."
July 28, 2012: Another party leader Chiranjeet Chakrobarty, made another controversial remark. He said, "The reason why there is an increase in cases of (molestation) is because women wear short skirts and dresses."
December 2, 2012: Becharam Manna, another TMC leader, said, "The TATAs and the Left colluded with each other to get a favourable verdict in Singur."
January 2, 2013: The video of a TMC leader showering currency notes at women dancers at a party function goes viral.
It was a year of bad publicity for Mamata Banerjee and she has now had enough. The Trinamool supremo is now asking partymen to mind their manners and school their tongues. Her plan is to introduce special training sessions to groom party MLAs in the art of public speaking.
Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, TMC Chief Whip and Trainer, said, "There are some slang languages that are used by few of the MLAs that is also part of the training, that they should learn how to behave and conduct themselves."
Half-hour everyday before the Assembly session, the MLAs will be trained on how to debate and speak to the media. With Panchayat elections round the corner and the Lok Sabha polls approaching fast, Mamata is not willing to take any chances. But what do people really want them to learn? We asked a few.
They said, "When they are making comments, typically on ladies, there should be some amount of restraint with it. They should remember that they have mothers and sisters in their own house."
Well we hope the TMC is listening. But you know what you can do when you hear them vent. Either listen or switch off the TV.
