Kolkata: A Trinamool Congress leader on Wednesday sparked a controversy when he urged his party workers to burn the houses of the independent candidates who are forcing them to vote in their favour.
"Vote for Mamata Banerjee, don't vote for anyone else and if any independent candidate forces you to vote then destroy and burn his houses," Anubrata Mondal said at a party rally in Bolpur in West Bengal.
Reacting to Mandal's statement, the opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) demanded his arrest. "We have spoken to the State Election Commission on his speech. The SEC can always get the CD of what he said. He should be arrested," CPI-M state secretariat member Rabin Deb said.
Mandal had earlier grabbed the limelight by describing the Congress as a party of "beggars" and asking his workers not to allow rival party candidates to file nomination papers in the rural body polls.
