Kolkata: Violence marred the second phase of panchayat polls in West Bengal as a CPI(M) candidate's husband has been killed after a crude bomb was hurled at him in Asansol. The incident took place on Monday morning while he was on his way to the polling booth in the Jamuria area of Asansol subdivision in Durdwan district.

One of the attackers has been lynched to death with sharp weapons by the locals.

Polls are scheduled in the districts of Burdwan, Hooghly and East Midnapore. Both Singur and Nandigram, places which paved Mamata Banerjee's assent to state power, would also vote during this phase.

All three districts, especially parts of Burdwan and Hooghly, have registered poll-related violence amongst the Trinamool Congress and CPI(M) supporters in the recent past and there are apprehensions of clashes during the polls as well.

Elections are taking place across 12,542 polling stations and most of the polling stations are declared 'sensitive'.

Candiates will fight for 10,545 seats in 707 Gram Panchayats, 2,047 seats in 74 Panchayat Samitis and 185 seats in three Zilla Parishads.

Nearly 50,000 state and central troops are deployed for the polls.
