WB panchayat polls: TMC supporters allegedly torch Independent candidate's house

Birbhum: Violence continued in the poll bound West Bengal, where the state will vote in the third phase of the panchayat poll on Friday. An Independent candidate's house has been torched allegedly by the Trinamool Congress supporters in the Gopalnagar area of Birbum on Thursday.

The TMC, however, has denied any involvement in the incident and said that the fire was accidental and nobody attacked his house. The incident took place after TMC leader Anubrata Mondal made a provocative speech to attack the Opposition as well as the police in Bolpur on Wednesday.

"Vote for Mamata Banerjee, don't vote for anyone else and if any independent candidate forces you to vote then destroy and burn his houses," he had said at a party rally in Bolpur in West Bengal.

Another TMC MP from Tehatta Tapas Pal has also kicked up a row as lashed out at the CPM calling it a wretched party and a nasty organisation. Pal, who was a Bengali cinema superstar, in his speech said that Left supporters and activists should be thrashed.

CPM leader D Raja said the state government is responsible for the violence in the state. "How can the leader threaten like that. There should be legal action against him and the Chief Minister and state government should ensure there is legal action against him," he said.

On Monday, a CPM supporter was killed when some miscreants hurled a crude bomb at him while he was going to a polling booth during the second phase of the panchayat polls. One of his attacker was also lynched to death by the locals.
