China Calls For NATO To Abandon Cold War Mentality As Russia Ukraine Conflict Increases Suspicion China’s foreign ministry on Thursday (February 9) called for NATO to end its “double-standards” and abandon its “Cold War mentality” in response to NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg’s comments concerning China’s military developments."We have never invaded any country nor never engaged in proxy wars, never engaged in military operations around the world, and never threatened other countries with force," said foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning at a news briefing in Beijing.Stoltenberg’s comments came during his visit to Japan on February 1, at which he pledged to strengthen ties with Tokyo to navigate an increasingly tense security environment triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine and its growing military cooperation with China.Although he said China was not an adversary, the NATO chief claimed the country was becoming a "more and more authoritarian power" that was displaying assertive behaviour, threatening Taiwan, and developing military capabilities that could also reach NATO countries.
