After applying for the membership in May 2022, Finland is now in the midst of its NATO accession process. Helsinki is in talks with Turkey and Hungary to clear their concerns and gain the final approval to join the alliance. However, Finland’s accession to a nuclear alliance such as NATO is likely to put Helsinki in a tough spot about its nuclear weapons policy. NATO considers nuclear weapons an important pillar, which runs afoul of Finland’s own law, which forbids possession of nukes. In November, Finland refuted any possibility of considering hosting nuclear weapons on its territory if and when it joins NATO. Like Finland, Sweden also made it clear it is not prepared to enter into preconditions on nuclear weapons for NATO membership. However, growing nuclear rhetoric from Russia may push Finland to rethink its non-proliferation policy on nuclear weapons.
